Rana Dasgupta is a novelist and essayist. Born on November 5, 1971 in Canterbury, England he was raised in Cambridge, England and studied at Balliol College, Oxford, the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud in Aix-en-Provence, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

He later moved base to Delhi, India in 2001 as living in England was too expensive.
His debut work, Tokyo Cancelled (2005), is an interesting, experimental work that examines the experiences of globalization. Considered as a modern-day Canterbury Tales, 13 passengers en route to Tokyo are stuck overnight in an airport they begin sharing one story each, all from different cities in the world. These stories reflect life in the 21st century with billionaires, film celebrities, labourers, illegal immigrants and sailors. The book Tokyo Cancelled was even shortlisted for the 2005 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize.

Dasgupta\'s second, Solo (2009) is an epic tale of the 20th and 21st centuries told from the perspective of a 100-year old Bulgarian man. Having achieved little in his 20th century life, he begins to see a long and prophetic dream of the 21st century, where all the ideological experiments of the previous century are over, and a collection of startling characters – demons and angels – emerge.

Rana Dasgupta’s works have a fresh storyline, interesting style of narration and characters that have not been written about. He once said in an interview: Paradoxically, the more the world becomes interwoven the less it seems possible to tell a single, representative story of it.

Rana Dasgupta was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Writers\' Prize for the novel Solo, it won both the region and overall best-book prize.
