Irving Wallace was an American novelist, short-story writer, and a screenwriter. He excelled in writing popular fictions which were all based on current events. His work as a screenwriter started from 1950 to 1959. He worked for various studios during his lifetime. Some of his bestsellers were translated into several languages, one of which was Finnish. He had 16 novels and 17 nonfiction works which together sold over 250 million copies. He is best known for his work in The Chapman Report.

Irving Wallace was born to Bessie Liss and Alexander Wallace on 19 March, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois. His family was originally from Russia and was Jewish. Irving Wallace was named after his maternal grandfather who was a book keeper. His childhood was spent in Kenosha, Wisconsin where he attended Kenosha Central High School.

As a teenager he sold stories to magazines. During the Second World War Irving served in the Capra Unit in Fort Fox along with Theodor Seuss Geisel and continued writing stories for magazines even during this time. He however turned to a more promising and better job -screenwriting in Hollywood. Some of his work as a screenwriter include: The West Point Story, Split Second, Meet Me at the Fair, and The big Circus which were released in 1950, 1953, 1953, and 1956 respectively.
After his stint as a screenwriter, he decided to become a full time writer. His first nonfiction work was titled as The Fabulous Origins which was out in the year 1955.When his first fiction novel The Sins of Philip Fleming was published in the year 1959, it didn’t go down very well with the critics. However he rose to fame after his novel The Chapman Report was published. The novel was published in fourteen different countries. The book made $750,000 in thirteen months. His novel The Man won him numerous awards after it was published in the year 1964.

Several of Irving Wallace’s novels were made into movies. The screenplay for The Chapman Report was done in the year 1962 which was directed by George Cukor. His novel The Man was also adapted into a screenplay in the year 1972. The novel showcased the story of the first African American President of the United States and the hatred that was showered on him by the white southerners and the blacks. The other novels that were made into movies were The Prize, The Word, and The Fan Club.

Irving Wallace died at the age of 74, on June 29, 1990 in Los Angeles, United States.
