Douglas Adams  was an English writer, dramatist, and musician. He’s the creator of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which started as a BBC Radio 4 series in 1978 and went on to become a  "trilogy" of five books that sold over 15 million copies in his lifetime, a TV series, a record album, a computer game and several stage adaptations and a Hollywood movie.

Following the success of Hitchhiker’s he came out with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980); Life, The Universe and Everything (1982); So Long and Thanks for all the Fish (1984); and Mostly Harmless (1992). He also wrote Dirk Gently\'s Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul (1988).

In 1984 Douglas teamed up with John Lloyd and wrote The Meaning of Liff, which was a dictionary of a humorous dictionary of toponymy and etymology. It is a "dictionary of things that there aren\'t any words for yet"; all the words listed are place names, and describe common feelings and objects for which there is no current English word.  Following its huge success The Deeper Meaning of Liff was published in 1990

The Observer Colour Magazine initiated moves in 1985 to send a zoologist, Mark Carwardine, and a writer, Douglas Adams, to Madagascar, to search for a nearly extinct lemur. Out of that journey was borne Last Chance to See, which Douglas has been quoted to claim as his favorite work.

The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time is a posthumous collection of previously unpublished material by Douglas Adams. It consists largely of essays about technology and life experiences, but its major selling point is the inclusion of the incomplete novel on which Adams was working at the time of his death, The Salmon of Doubt.

He sold over 15 million books in the UK, the US and Australia and was also a best seller in German, Swedish and many other languages.  Apart from this, he has also written for famous Monty Python and Doctor Who series on the BBC.

In December 1982 Douglas had three books in both the New York Times bestseller list and the Publishers\' Weekly bestseller list - the first British author to have achieved this since Ian Fleming.

Douglas won his first Golden Pan (for 1,000,000 paperback sales of HHGG) in 1984. It was the quickest that any Pan book had ever reached that figure, and Douglas was the youngest winner (i.e. age at time of writing), since Anne Frank. He won two further Golden Pans, for Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and Life, The Universe & Everything.

In 1996, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was placed at number 24 in the Waterstone’s Books/Channel Four list of the One Hundred Greatest Books of the Century.
