Asha Parekh is a popular Bollywood actress, director and producer. She is considered to be amongst the top Bollywood stars of the 60s and early 70s. Asha Parekh learned classical dance at an early age and became so well in it that she even performed at stage shows and private functions.
Asha Parekh made her first silver screen appearance as a child artist in the 1952 film, Aasmaan. Her first serious attempt at acting came at the age of sixteen, but she was rejected by Vijay Bhatt during the auditions only to be picked up by Nasir Hussain in the blockbuster movie, Dil Deke Dekho (1959) opposite Shammi Kapoor. This film catapulted her into the big league and made her a huge star. After this, Nasir Hussain went on to cast her in six other films including Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Teesri Manzil and Pyaar Ka Mausam.
She was also casted by many other famous directors like Vijay Anand, Mohan Saigal and J.P. Dutta in much more serious roles in films like Kati Patang and Pagla Kahin Ka. She also appeared in several Gujarati films, the most famous of them being Akhand Saubhagyavati. Apart from having a super successful acting career, she also went on to become the first female chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification. She gave up acting in 1995 to take up film direction and production. Asha Parekh is the recipient of the Filmfare Best Actress Award, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, IIFA Award, FICCI Living Legend Award and a Bollywood Award amongst several other awards.
