Anoushka Shankar is a US based sitar player and composer. She is the daughter of famous Indian sitar player, Pandit Ravi Shankar and half sister of Grammy Award winner, Norah Jones. Anoushka Shankar started playing sitar alongside her father while she was still a child. She gave her first public performance at the age of thirteen and had already signed her first record deal by the time she was sixteen.
She released her debut album, Anoushka in 1998 and went on to become the first female to ever perform at the Ramakrishna Centre in Kolkata. In 2007, she released a fusion album titled Breathing Under Water in collaboration with Karsh Kale. In 2008, she performed a benefit program for the victims of the 2008 Mumbai Attack in which she performed along side Jetho Tull. On the social front, she is an active supporter of the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). She is also the recipient of the British House of Commons Shield and Woman of the Year award.
